Dealing With Unforgiveness
Vince D'Acchioli, 3/21/2002

New Page 1

Session Outline:

"To forgive oneself"—? No, that doesn’t work: we have to be forgiven. But we can only believe this is possible if we ourselves can forgive.
Dag Hammarskjöld (1905–61)

Luke 6:37 "Forgive and you will be forgiven"

The Greek word for forgive is "Apoluo". It means to loose away.

How do I become a forgiving person?

First, ask God to show you where you may be harboring unforgiveness.

Next, understand the nature of forgiveness. What it is-and what it is not.

1.) Forgiveness is not __________________ (Matt. 18:21-22)

2.) Forgiveness is not an ________________ (2 Cor. 5:18) (Eph. 4:32)

"He who cannot forgive breaks the bridge over which he himself must pass." George Herbert.

The number one cause of un-dealt with anger is unforgiveness.

Life Implication:

"Spiritual passion can not coexist with resentments —harboring resentment hinders spiritual growth and effectiveness" Gordon MacDonald, (Restoring Your Spiritual Passion)

Matt. 5:23-24 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother;

then come and offer your gift.

God is teaching us here that we need to get right with our brother before we approach Him. In other words, we will not be able to get close to God and grow unless we deal with unforgiveness in our heart. His warnings are clear.

1John 2:11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.

Discussion Question:

Is there some one or more people that you need to forgive? Do you need to ask someone to forgive you?
